Homemade Body Care

Small things you can make for yourself instead of buying another product.

6 min read

We live in a world that has turned nearly every aspect of caring for ourselves into something we can buy.

There is a cream for this. A scrub for that. A serum for something else. Different bottles, different promises, different ingredient lists—and somehow we're left wondering whether we're doing enough.

I don't think caring for yourself has to be that complicated.

There is something wonderfully grounding about making a small part of your own body care. Not because you need to become completely self-sufficient, and certainly not because everything you make at home is automatically better. Sometimes buying something is the simplest and most sensible choice.

But sometimes you can make something yourself.

A sugar scrub.

A nourishing body oil.

A simple bath with herbs and salt.

Something made from a handful of ingredients you recognize.

And sometimes the making is part of the ritual.

Make Less. Notice More.

Homemade body care isn't really about making another thing to add to your to-do list. For me, it's about slowing down enough to notice what I'm using and why.

There's something different about measuring a few ingredients into a bowl, stirring them together, choosing a bottle, and knowing exactly what's inside it. The process asks for your attention. And in a world that constantly asks us to hurry, that attention can be its own form of care.

It also reminds me that simplicity doesn't have to mean deprivation. Sometimes simpler is simply enough.

Start With What You Actually Need

You don't need a cabinet full of oils and herbs to begin. Start with one thing you already know you'll use.

If your skin enjoys a simple body oil, make one. If you love a good sugar scrub, try that. If a warm bath helps you come back to yourself at the end of a difficult day, add some salt and a few botanicals and let the bath become something more than a way to get clean.

The goal isn't perfection.

It's paying attention.

What feels good on your skin? What scents make you slow down? What ingredients do you recognize? What do you actually enjoy using?

Those questions are more useful to me than another promise on a product label.

A Few Simple Recipes

I've gathered a few uncomplicated recipes here that can become part of your everyday rituals. They're intentionally simple, using a small number of ingredients and very little equipment.

Body Oils — simple blends for nourishing the skin after a shower or bath.

Homemade Body Scrubs — uncomplicated sugar-based scrubs that turn an ordinary shower into a small ritual.

Bath & Botanical Rituals — salts, herbs, and botanicals for creating a little more space at the end of the day.

Hair Care — simple ingredient-based care when you want to make something yourself.

Let It Be Simple

You don't have to make everything.

You don't have to grow your own herbs, press your own oils, or turn your bathroom into a laboratory. 😂

Make something when making it brings you pleasure. Buy something when buying it makes more sense. There is no virtue in making life harder than it needs to be.

What matters is the awareness behind the choice.

Make something. Use it slowly. Notice how it feels.

Sometimes caring for yourself can be that simple.
